The Piriformis tends to take all the attention in this small but important group of hip muscles. While these muscles are important hip stabilizers they are more varied than they are often taught in massage school. We will explore the anatomy and function of these 6 muscles as well as strategies for hip joint stability. We will cover releases for all 6 of these muscles, and, in so doing, will see how the obturator internus gives us a glimpse into the edge of the pelvic floor (externally) and how obturator externus functions as as adductor of the thigh. We will also address the grip that the quadratus femoris can have on the hip joint (it's a bigger muscle than you might think). And, of course, techniques for releasing the piriformis!
